Meet Maggie. Maggie has an amazing jewelry company, a gorgeous family, and is more adventurous than I'll ever be. Seriously. This woman is not afraid to try new things and has already done so much in her life! She is such a huge inspiration and I was so incredibly honored to take her family photos. I am looking forward to working with her in the future on a few upcoming projects! We met last month when I attended my first local Collaboration over Competition meeting and we clicked instantly after realizing we have a shared love for jewelry making and homeschooling our kiddos.

Boise Family Photographer.jpg

Fun fact: We both moved to Boise, Idaho this year from California! And we're relatively close neighbors! It's crazy to think we had to move to an entirely new state just to meet each other, but I'm so glad we did!

Now, meet Maggie's family. She and her oh-so-sweet husband have been married for 10 years. Isn't that amazing?! The two met in high school, but didn't start dating until college. Maggie admitted she was a bit intimidated by him at first because of the purple mohawk he had! Yet here they are, years later, standing side by side and enjoying life with each other. I loved taking a step back to just watch them interact with each other and witness the love that they share.

This man of hers brings her breakfast in bed every morning and makes it a point to give her a foot massage often. They even take ballet classes together! If they aren't serious couples goals, I don't know what is. Plus, they have 3 beautiful daughters. All of which have such amazing, independent personalities, yet they all share one thing in common – They are so polite! Each one of them was so well behaved, had the sweetest smile and a heart of gold. I could have sat around and joked with them all night.

I am so glad to have met this family and share their story. Photography has allowed me to meet so many incredible people and I will forever be thankful for it!

1 Year Session - Leland | Boise Family Photographer

Little hands. Toothy smiles. Messy faces. Soft skin. Sweet curls.

I seriously love babies.

From those fresh first hours to the inquiring toddler stage. I really do love all of it. When I was pregnant with our firsts I asked my husband in all seriousness how he would feel about having 6 kids. He responded with "let's see how this one goes first". Well, after 3 kids I can honestly say I laugh at poor, young and naive Rachel regularly. It has been such a huge blessing in my photography career to be able to love on all the additional babies that come my way, and yet still keep my sanity at home. Or atleast some of it.

This little man is so full of expression and life. You can already tell that he has the biggest heart and love for those around him. We celebrated his turning one with a super fun shoot down on the Boise river. What better way to capture the essence of a child than to let them be a child? Splashing around in the river, digging in the dirt, finding sticks to play with... This kid did it all. I loved getting to take pictures of him just being in his element.

What made it even better is this was my very first shoot in our new home of Boise, Idaho. AND this little guy is none other than my best friend's sweet son. Not many people get to move to their dream state with their best friend, but I'm so blessed to be able to say that I did. What is funny is photography is actually how I met her! She called me up to do her family pictures 5 years ago and we instantly clicked. I love being able to photograph her family as they grow through out the years, and more so the relationships photography has allowed me to create.

Why I Love Family | Boise Family Photographer

In March of 2014 I was 28 weeks pregnant. My husband and I spent the day cleaning and running errands like any other Saturday as we prepared for our sweet twins. Little did we know they would be coming sooner than we expected. Awoken at 1 in the morning in a panic we realized something wasn't quite right and rushed to the hospital. Sure enough, our sweet twins were trying to make their entrance in to this world 12 weeks early. After nearly two weeks of being on bed rest in the hospital, constant monitoring and a turn for the worst, our little babes were born and whisked away to the NICU. They spent 3 months in there with many ups and downs, a lot of heartache, but also so much joy. Because even though it was one of the hardest and darkest times in our lives, my husband and I couldn't have been happier - because we were now crowned with the new title of "Mom and Dad".

01web3.jpg

Our whirlwind experience of entering parenthood taught me many things, but one of the biggest lessons I take to heart is that family is so important. Every family has their own story. Their own journey. Their own memories. I love being able to photograph a family and make their story known. To preserve the love that they have for each other. To allow them to look at the pictures hanging on their walls and remember every trial, every tear, every milestone, and every celebration. From the littlest ones taking their first steps to the biggest ones graduating high school, to the brand new parents, and the well seasoned pros. These ever fleeting days go so quickly, but these same days belong only to you, and I love that I can help you remember them.

I love being able to make little ones laugh, letting them run and be wild - letting them be kids! All while I get to capture it.

0111.jpg
013.jpg

I love hearing siblings remissness over their childhood and all the silly things they would do together. All while I get to capture it.

I love seeing mom and dad look on at their children, enjoying a moment of intimacy and deep thought as they step back and realize how their love has grown and how far they have come together. All while I get to capture it.

I love being able to share with others something so important to me - Family. All while I get to capture it.

Guys, I'm Really Weird. | Boise Family Photographer

I'm a fairly introverted person. I'm not usually one to put myself out there or strike up conversations. I would much rather listen to others for hours and get to know them on a more personal level! So that got me thinking.. what are some facts about myself that people might not otherwise know?

Well. Here you have it. 10 random facts about me:

1. I'm allergic to cold.
No joke. I will break out in hives, turn red and swell up. It was worse when I was a kid, but it still happens on occasion if I get too cold. Which makes enjoying my favorite dessert (icecream) a little difficult at times!

27 Weeks.jpg

2. I was almost a pediatrician.
If i wasn't a photographer and stay at home mom I would have become a pediatrician. I seriously considered a handful of colleges that offered pediatric majors. But then I realized where my preferences lie and that I could still work with kids doing something I love just as much - photography! Give me all the babies every day!

3. I always wanted a broken arm.
As a kid I thought casts not only looked cool, but MADE you cool. I tried multiple times to break an arm, but it never happened. Meanwhile, my brother had no problem breaking himself. Queue jealousy.

4. I was 19 before I ever stepped outside of CA.
And only then because we went to Nevada for our honeymoon. Now 6 years later I've been to 5 states, moved to one of them (beloved Idaho) and have plans to travel to more.

5. But not by plane.
Planes freak me out and I refuse to go on them. I rather leave days earlier and drive. Something about the long waits through TSA and sitting next to coughing people gives me serious anxiety.

0124.jpg

6. I hate fish.
The look. The smell. The taste. 🤢 pretty much the only thing I will eat that comes from a body of water is clam chowder. Which is ironic, because I married in to a family that loves fish.

7. My first job was as a bookkeeper/office manager.
I worked for 5 years before my husband and I had children. The agreement we made when we were dating was always that I would stay home with our kids as long as we could afford it. It's challenging at times, but I would never trade being home with them for a desk and a paycheck. I love being able to watch them grow day in and day out and all the silly adventures we get to have together.

8. I love to make jewelry.
I have dreams of one day opening up my own jewelry line filled with one-of-a-kind nature inspired pieces. It's been a goal to really pursue the world of metalsmithing and make a lot of my items from scratch.

9. I am not a fan of exercise.
However, I would gladly hike all day. I love exploring and going on adventures. The smell and sound of the outdoors will always be one of my favorites.

10. I was homeschooled.
From Kindergarten - 11th grade. Yes, I was weird (I still am, if we're being real here). No, I never wished I had gone to public school. Honestly, I enjoyed it a lot. I got to learn at my own pace, study in my pajamas and take cool field trips. I got to graduate early so I could attend college alongside my husband. I got to work full time at 16 years old and was able to afford my first car on my own. I feel like I had a more hands-on experience and was exactly where I needed to be.

The Hollar Family | Boise Family Photographer

Taking pictures for family is always fun. The more history I have with a client the better the shoot is! However, this one especially hit close to home. You see, my sister and her family were planning to embark on a huge adventure in the next few months. And I'm talking "sell your house and all your belongings to huddle up in a trailer and travel across the united states to find your new forever home" kind of huge adventure. So as bittersweet of a moment that it was, I was still more than happy to take these pictures for my family.

We decided to make a whole weekend out of it and camp down by the beach in a beautiful little area. Our trailer was literally a 2 minute walk from the shore! To kick off all the fun stuff we had planned for the weekend we decided to do the pictures first. It was a beautiful, overcast day and we were met with the crisp ocean air and the sound of rolling waves. You could not have asked for a better day for these guys to have their last hurrah at the beaches of California.

The beginning of their story starts out like most others. Ben was constantly over worked at a soul sucking job that he hated, causing him to sacrifice precious family time and leaving him wondering if it was all worth it. Meg and Ben realized there had to be something more to life than this so they spent months tirelessly fixing up their home and consolidating their possessions. Their hard work paid off and within a year they managed to sell their home, quit their jobs and move their family into a trailer that has allowed them to be able to achieve their goals. Already they have explored multiple states and grown so much closer as a family.

While their ending is still up in the air, they are enjoying every second of the current chapter. One day they will pick their favorite state to find their forever home in, but for now they are living their dreams in under 300 square feet.

2018 Senior - Greer | Boise Senior Photographer

This girl and her family are near and dear to my heart. They have been so gracious in allowing me to photograph their family for the last 5 years, and have made me feel like an additional member in the process! Between senior pictures for all three kids, birthday parties and events, it's been a wonderful time capturing all of their milestones and being welcomed into their home.

Greer is seriously such a sweetheart. She is bright, bubbly and so quick to flash that gorgeous smile at you. We had an absolute blast at this session! From talking about her boyfriend, cracking jokes and maybe just a little gossip, it was a great afternoon. Her mom even tagged along to be her own personal hype man! We laughed all about stepping in muddy puddles, the weird angles photographers use to get the best pictures, and how we all three have horrible RBF and that it can sometimes put us in awkward situations, but it always make for the best stories.

I barely had to mention how to pose this whole entire shoot. She crushed it. Greer was such an ideal model and pulled out all the stops. And really, when you're that gorgeous the camera just naturally loves you anyhow! Her personality radiates through these pictures, showing how fun she is and also capturing that killer smolder.

Senior year is often one of the best and yet scariest times. It's filled with so much fun and memories with friends and family, and yet also the promise of a completely new and unknown adventure lying ahead. With embarking on college, a new job, adulthood, personal growth.. it all can be overwhelming. But honestly, if you take a deep breath and learn to live in the moment it will be such an amazing experience to add to the books!

The Strickland Family | Boise Family Photographer

I feel like to fully understand the inspiration for this session you need to know two things.
Stephanie knows exactly what she wants. And she will stop at nothing to get it.

She is one of the most driven people I have ever met and I am so blessed to call her my cousin (by marriage). She loves to the fullest extent, she goes out of her way for so many people and she never takes no for an answer. Her firecracker personality and Rick's genuine sweetness has trickled down to make some of the most amazing kids you will ever meet. This family has accomplished so much and it was only fitting to go all out for this photo session.

After weeks of planning and excitement the day finally came. We made our way over to Montaña de Oro State Park and began the formal half of our session in the woods. And can I just take a moment to give major props to these women for hiking through dirt and twigs in stunning dresses? It was all worth it. We listened to music, joked freely and made some seriously gorgeous photos in the process.

After a quick change at the cars in a makeshift dressing room we hiked a good 5-10 minutes down sandy steps and up a small hill only to be met by a gorgeous secluded beach. This wonderful bunch embraced chilly ocean waves around their ankles as we shot the casual portion of this session until the sun kissed the horizon goodnight.

I absolutely LOVE when my clients come to me with a specific vision in mind. I love even more so that they trust me to make sure that their vision comes to life. This was seriously a session for the books and one that I will always look back on and smile.

What to Wear | Boise Family Photographer

So we met. We clicked. You booked! SO exciting! But after the initial excitement wears off you're left wondering "...What do I wear? What does my spouse wear? My kids?!"
It's okay. I got you.

I'm going to give you some tips and examples on how to choose the right outfit for your session. And what's better, If for some reason you get to the end of this blog post and still can't figure it out, Just give me a call and we'll figure it out together!

The Basics

  • Pick 3-4 colors that coordinate and dress everyone in a variation there of. Bold Colors and Patterns photograph well, as do Off White & Pastels, depending on the theme you are going for.

  • Accessorize! but keep it balanced. Minimal accessories with bold clothing or bold accessories with solid clothing.

  • Footwear is also important! Choose colors & styles that coordinate with your outfit. Brown, Black and Tan are good basic colors, but a bright colored shoe with a monotone outfit also looks great and creates a nice POP in photos!

  • Don’t be afraid to splurge on hair and makeup, either! What better excuse to pamper yourself than a photo session? The more confident you are in how you look the more relaxed you will be in your photos.

Examples of Coordinating Color Tones

color+tones.jpg

Overwhelmed? Don't be. Really the most important thing out of all of this is make sure that you're comfortable in whatever you're wearing. The better you feel about how you look and the less you have to stress about being too hot or itchy will make for a smooth sailing session.

Extra Tip: Try to avoid the following!
- White clothing or any tone that may wash you out -
- Don’t put everyone in the same outfit. (Ex. All black shirts, same toned jeans, etc.) -
- Don’t wear anything with a big brand logo on it, especially near the face -
- Be careful to not over-accessorize! You don’t want it to distract from yourself or others -
 - Make sure to avoid generic flipflops or run down sneakers -

Baby Jones | Boise Maternity Photographer

I love babies. Their smell, their chubby rolls, their sweet slobbery smiles. Everything about them is adorable. That said, It's truly incredible what the female body can endure and accomplish! I don't do maternity sessions very often, but when I do I'm always reminded of how amazing pregnancy is. This sweet mother-to-be was absolutely glowing during her session and her love and excitement just radiated off of her.

3.jpg
14.jpg

When Hannah came to me to book her maternity session I was so excited. She had a beautiful dress all picked out, the location couldn't have been more dreamy, and the honeymoon love between her and Zach was still fresh and thriving. Everything was absolutely perfect. We found this beautifully lush area to shoot at down by the river and it all just fit the look we were trying to achieve.

11.jpg
10.jpg
6.jpg

Hannah and Zach have known each other since diaper days, practically. Their families grew up together, playing in mountains and doing school alongside one another. It only made sense for the two of them to fall in love and create this beautiful little family.

17.jpg
20.jpg

There is something so special about your first born. You have no clue what you're doing, there is so much information and various opinions thrown at you from different directions, and yet... when you sit back and just listen to your maternal instincts it all somehow magically works out. From the moment you meet that sweet baby you build a special bond and grow a love like none-other, knowing their every need without batting an eye.

28.jpg

I wish the best of luck to these two as they raise their sweet baby girl. That they would embrace every giggle, every new tooth, every milestone passed and every sweet memory made with this little babe. Motherhood is terrifying and empowering all at the same time, and is truly one of the greatest blessing to experience.
